About the event
Read to Grow
30-Minute Reading Enrichment Session
The Read to Grow program is a fun and engaging 30-minute literacy session designed to help children strengthen their reading skills through one-on-one and small-group support. Volunteers work alongside children to practice reading, build confidence, improve comprehension, and foster a lifelong love of books.
Research shows that children who struggle with reading early in life are more likely to face academic challenges later on. In Georgia, only 38% of third-grade students are reading proficiently, meaning nearly two-thirds are not reading at grade level. Reading proficiency by third grade is considered one of the strongest predictors of future academic success and high school graduation.
Closer to home, Sumter County schools report reading proficiency rates significantly below the state average, highlighting the need for community-based literacy support and mentoring opportunities.
Through caring volunteers, encouragement, and consistent reading practice, Read to Grow aims to help children build confidence, improve literacy skills, and discover the joy of reading—one story at a time.
